Educational opportunities at United World Colleges (UWC) A truly global education
What are the United World Colleges?
Our mission at the United World Colleges is to inspire young people to use their talents and energies to lead change around the world, regardless of their chosen future path.
UWC (United World Colleges) is a global movement that uses education as a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Our mission is to inspire young people to use their talents and energies to effect positive change, regardless of their chosen path in life.
Education at the United World Colleges
The United World Colleges comprise 18 schools and colleges across four continents. Most focus on students aged 16 to 19, but some also cater to the needs of younger learners. Each school has its own unique character and environment, dedicated to transforming the idealism and energy of young people into:
- Lifelong Action.
- Compassion.
- Responsibility.
At the United World Colleges, we are proud of our diversity. Our UWC National Committees in over 150 countries and territories select students from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. This allows students to:
- Make friends from all over the world.
- Understand different ways of thinking.

Holistic Admissions
While we are selective, we are not exclusive. We seek compassionate and idealistic students who want to make the world a better place. We believe that financial constraints should not prevent anyone from receiving a quality education. Over 80% of students selected by UWC National Committees receive full or partial financial assistance, funded by our generous supporters.
Our Refugee Initiative provides full scholarships to young people displaced by conflict. We also offer shorter-term learning programs on topics such as leadership, equality, and sustainability, enabling more people to access a UWC education.

Selection Criteria
A quality education can transform lives, yet too many are still denied it.
That’s why UWC is different. We believe that quality education shouldn’t be limited to the wealthy or powerful. We believe that those with the passion and desire to change the world should be given the opportunity to shine.
So why do we have a selection process?
- A UWC education is open to anyone; it’s not suitable for everyone, as our curriculum can be rigorous, challenging, and requires a lot of dedication.
- Our places are limited, and our class sizes are small. This ensures our students receive the individual attention they need and that we build a community that encourages students to socialize and learn from each other.
- We want to ensure that those who receive a UWC education have the passion and commitment to complete it, and the drive to apply it to make a difference and improve the world.
How do you select students?
Each UWC National Committee has its own deadlines and designs its selection process to reflect its culture and community, but the same six key criteria are used to select students:
- Intellectual Curiosity: You love learning about the world around you—inside and outside the classroom. You have at least one academic area that you are passionate about and would like to explore further. You are able to recognize and critically analyze global and local issues.
- Commitment to Your Values and UWC Values: You share UWC values and demonstrate a commitment to following its Code of Conduct. You have humility and the ability to listen to and value the opinions of others. You appreciate that while others may have different points of view, they may also be right. You promote UWC values in your daily life and act as a “global citizen.”
- Social Competence: You interact respectfully with others, understand and value their perspectives and reasons, and are able to work as part of a team to find solutions to problems. You know how to express yourself appropriately in a variety of situations and to different people.
- Resilience, Self-Awareness, and Independence: You can take care of yourself physically and emotionally during difficult situations, for example, in a boarding school setting. You have developed good coping strategies and are not easily overwhelmed, but you also know when to ask for help for yourself and others.
- Personal Responsibility and Integrity: You can articulate and revisit your own values, and are able to compare and reflect on them against the values of others. The way you behave within your family and community reflects your values and beliefs. You can communicate your own needs and be aware of the needs of others, demonstrating a sense of collective responsibility.
- Academic Resilience: You have the ability to meet the rigorous requirements of the IB Diploma Programme or the IB Career-Related Programme.
We are looking for students who want to contribute to a better world, whatever their background.
