Full scholarship to support outstanding students on the 1+1 MBA, covering both the Master’s degree and the MBA year.

Established in 2014, the Pershing Square Foundation awards up to five full scholarships to support outstanding students on the 1+1 MBA, covering both the Master’s degree and the MBA year.

Recipients are exceptional individuals who can demonstrate the potential and commitment to finding scalable and sustainable solutions to world-scale social challenges.
You can pursue any of the partnering Master’s degrees and combine it with our MBA. Further details regarding eligibility can be found below.

You will also be invited to a spring ‘trek’ to New York City hosted by the Pershing Square Foundation, where you can participate in meetings and workshops with leading innovators and change makers.
You will have the opportunity to attend prestigious conferences and events throughout the year, including the Ditchley Conferences and the Skoll World Forum.

Blavatnik School of Government

The Master of Public Policy (MPP) is an intensive one-year graduate degree that offers a distinctive approach to public policy.

Taught by outstanding academics as well as expert practitioners, you will be uniquely positioned to develop the academic knowledge and professional skills and academic knowledge to address some of this century’s most complex public policy challenges. Like no other course, the MPP represents a transformative opportunity for aspiring leaders with a commitment to public service.

Centre for Criminology

MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice is a nine-month, full-time programme which equips its graduates with an advanced understanding of crime and criminal justice.

The degree comprises core courses in criminological theory and the study of criminal justice, provides training in research design and methodology, and offers students the opportunity to take optional courses in a wide range of subject areas, including policing, sentencing, prisons, the sociology of punishment, restorative justice, crime and the family, human rights, victims, youth justice, risk and security and the death penalty.

Department of Computer Science

MSc in Computer Science is designed to teach the mathematical principles of specification, design and efficient implementation of both software and hardware. It is intended for computer science graduates as well as graduates in other numerate disciplines who have some training or programming experience or have been employed professionally in a related industry.

Department of Education

MSc in Education (Child Development and Education) aims to promote critical understanding of developmental theories and research, and the use of this knowledge in the design and evaluation of programmes aimed at promoting children’s development and education.
MSc in Education (Comparative and International Education) has been in existence in Oxford for more than ten years. Successful course graduates now have positions in international organisations or in higher education.
MSc in Education (Higher Education) provides a broad introduction into the complex field of theories and practice in higher education globally.

Department of Pharmacology

MSc in Pharmacology: aims to provide students with the necessary theoretical and practical training to enable them to integrate post-genomic molecular biology with biological function.

Department of Social Policy & Intervention

MSc in Comparative Social Policy explores welfare systems and policy developments across a range of different countries.
MSc in Evidence-Based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation teaches how interventions may be assessed and evaluated, and how critical appraisal can test the claims of “evidence based practice”.

Department of Sociology

MSc in Sociology prepares you for doctoral work in Sociology and provides a stand-alone training for careers in social research.

Faculty of History

MSc in Economic and Social History: This specialist Master’s programme offers a unique framework for research training in economic and social history. The compulsory core qualifying papers provide an opportunity to evaluate a range of different approaches, and also for the students to influence and respond to each other. They impart a common language, and create a close and friendly community, in which ideas are shared and strong personal ties are forged.

The programme offers a wide range of options and allows students to specialize in economic and/or social history, or historical demography, although the boundaries between these areas are deliberately permeable.

Faculty of Law

Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL): The BCL is a world-renowned taught nine-month graduate course in law, designed to serve outstanding law students from common law backgrounds. The BCL aims to bring students into advanced intellectual engagement with some of the most difficult issues in law and legal theory, an engagement distinguished by rigour, depth and conceptual sophistication requiring immersion in law as an academic discipline as well as informed openness to neighbouring disciplines
Magister Juris (MJur): Similar to the BCL above, the nine-month graduate-level MJur is for outstanding students from a civil law background. The programme gives students from non-common law backgrounds an opportunity to explore some of the distinctive methods, practises and doctrines of the common law. The MJur aims to bring students into advanced intellectual engagement with some of the most difficult issues in law and legal theory, an engagement distinguished by rigour, depth and conceptual sophistication requiring immersion in law as an academic discipline as well as informed openness to neighbouring disciplines.
The MSc Law and Finance (MLF) is taught jointly by the Faculty of Law and Saïd Business School. The full-time, ten-month programme offers students with a prior background in law the chance to develop an advanced interdisciplinary understanding of relevant economic and financial contexts. As part of the curriculum, MLF students undertake graduate-level courses in: Financial Economics, Corporate Finance, and Law and Economics of Corporate Transactions.

Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages (Humanities Division)

MSt in Modern Languages: a nine-month, full-time programme offering advanced work in one or two literatures. The course is designed to allow those who have a high level of attainment in a foreign language, and have studied literature to a degree level, to undertake more advanced work. It offers a wide range of languages with flexible, tailored programmes and various interdisciplinary options such as Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, European Enlightenment and Medieval Studies.

The course provides a self-contained qualification that can lead on to further study but is also valuable in its own right.

Faculty of Music

MSt in Music can serve both as a self-contained course for students wishing to pursue more advanced music studies for one year or as an excellent preparation for doctoral research. Students on the three MSt courses follow a common structure, supported by appropriate individual supervision or tuition in their chosen specialism.

Each MSt programme introduces a broad range of current methodologies and approaches in music scholarship. The main MSt teaching and coursework is done in the first two terms; the third is reserved for completion of assessed work.

Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine

MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine: A full-time one-year multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary programme examining major challenges to the health of populations in resource-limited contexts. The course is embedded within the Oxford Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health, Nuffield Department of Medicine.

The course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of the major global health problems in resource-limited settings and their potential solutions; knowledge and skills in research techniques applied in the analysis of global health problems, including quantitative and qualitative research methods, health policy and systems research and public health, with opportunities for training in additional specialist fields; capacity to critically appraise evidence in global health; skills and practical experience in researching specific health problems.

Oxford Department of International Development

MSc in Migration Studies is a nine-month interdisciplinary master’s degree that analyses migration from a global perspective and as an integral part of development and social change. It will introduce you to key migration concepts, methods and theories across the social sciences and prepare you for further research or for a career in policy and international development.

Oxford Internet Institute

MSc in Social Data Science: The multidisciplinary MSc in Social Data Science provides the social and technical expertise needed to analyse unstructured heterogeneous data about human behaviour, thereby informing our understanding of the human world.
MSc in Social Science of the Internet: is an eleven-month, full-time programme that enables students from a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds to take Internet-related courses in law, policy and other social sciences in the context of this dynamic and supportive multi-disciplinary department. The programme is designed to ensure that all students attain an in-depth understanding of the social science concepts, theories and methods required to undertake and assess rigorous empirical research or policy analysis of Internet-related issues.

School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography

MSc in Social Anthropology aims to provide a strong background in analytical and methodological issues in the subject, and practice in the critical evaluation of its sources, both in the library and in the context of fieldwork.
MSc in Visual, Material and Museum Anthropology is a structured programme of lectures, classes and tutorials, followed by individual study and the writing of a dissertation. In addition to the teaching provided specifically for the VMMA programme, you will also be able to attend lectures in social anthropology to link your work to broader trends in the discipline.
MSc in Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology explores human thought, behaviour and culture from the perspectives of the evolutionary and cognitive sciences. It includes courses on the investigation of biological evolution and cognition, quantitative methods, the evolution of human behaviour and the mind and culture course, followed the writing of a research dissertation

School of Geography and the Environment

MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management designed to develop critical understandings of conservation and biodiversity science and practice, and the socio-economic, political, cultural and institutional environments within which policy and management decisions are made.
MSc in Environmental Change and Management aims to produce students with a broad appreciation of all aspects of the management of people and institutions in relation to environmental change, who are analytical in their approach, and are competent and aware decision makers.
MSc in Nature, Society and Environmental Governance recognises that responding to profound political and environmental challenges requires a new generation of researchers and policy professionals who are able to think in innovative, rigorous and flexible ways across disciplinary and sectoral boundaries.
MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management aims to equip the next generation of water professionals with the blend of skills necessary to make a significant contribution to sustainable water management pathways across competing priorities of water for ecosystems, food, energy, economic growth and human consumption.

School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies

MSc in African Studies: A nine-month programme that provides an excellent foundation for those who wish to expand their knowledge of African Studies, prior to working for NGOs, the civil service, international organisations and the media, or in other professional capacities.
MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies: A twelve month Master’s programme designed to provide high quality graduate research training with an emphasis on an appreciation of research methods and on deepening students’ understanding of modern China.
MSc in Japanese Studies: A twelve-month Master’s programme that provides students with a combination of courses about Japan, mainly the social sciences, an intensive language programme and a research methods course. It culminates with a 10,000 word dissertation submitted by 1 September.
MSc in Latin American Studies: The programme provides an interdisciplinary understanding of the main developments in Latin America since c1900 to the present. While the programme emphasises the specific features of individual countries, there is also broad comparative coverage of major trends such as authoritarianism and democracy, the economic cycle, the effect of international factors, the evolution of the Left and Right, revolutionary movements and the effects of neo-liberal economic models.
MSc in Modern South Asian Studies: The programme brings together Oxford’s wealth of expertise on the different states, societies, economies and cultures of South Asia within a single programme. Students choose one of two streams: Contemporary India, exploring present-day India’s social, economic and political achievements and challenges, and the connections between the country’s democratic and developmental successes and failures; or Modern South Asia. ranging more broadly across the states and societies of the subcontinent.
MSc in Russian and East European Studies: The Russian and East European Studies programme is for graduates who are interested in gaining a deeper knowledge and understanding of Russia and Eastern Europe through the study of the region across a range of disciplines including history, economics, politics, international relations, society and culture.

Value

As a Pershing Square scholar you will receive funding for both your Master’s degree and MBA programme course fees.

The scholarship also provides at least £15,009 towards living expenses for both years of study.

Eligibility criteria

Scholarships are awarded to individuals with:

Academic achievement, demonstrated through degree results, GMAT or GRE score, previous university prizes and awards, and other academic achievements
Leadership potential, demonstrated through experience and motivation
Strong personal character, integrity and commitment
Intention to focus on addressing world-scale social challenges in your career, either in an existing organisation or through development of a new enterprise
Ability to envision how to achieve scalable and sustainable solutions to these challenges
Articulated vision on how the Oxford 1+1 MBA will allow you to fulfil your objectives

Eligible applicants (in order of priority):

Applicants to the Oxford 1+1 MBA Programme
Applicants who apply to any full-time one-year Master’s course that is not currently part of the official list of partner 1+1 MBA Programme; and to the MBA (as a separate application)
Current Oxford students on a non-MBA course, who are applying to the MBA after the completion of their current Master’s/DPhil course (with no gap year(s))

How to apply

Each of our partnering Master’s programmes has its own application form, deadlines and requirements. In order to be considered for the Pershing Square Scholarship you must apply to the 1+1 MBA by the January 2020 deadline.

When you submit your 1+1 MBA application form you will be asked if you would like to be considered for the Pershing Square Scholarship.

Submit an essay in your application form of no more than 500 words addressing this question ‘How do you intend to change the world? What does this tell us about you as a person?’

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with the selection panel.
